New York State 15 Hour

Health & Safety Mandated Training

Cost: $275 upon registration

Rebate: $235 upon completion for the license holder only.

Total Cost: $40 for the license holder or $275 for other students

There are two types of child care providers. A Registered Family Day Care provider cares for up to 8 children. A Licensed Group Family Day Care provider cares for up to 16 children. If you are applying to become a licensed group family day care provider you will need an assistant who is at least 18 years old who will be required to complete much of the same process as you will.

NYS requires that all new family or group day care providers complete a 15-hour state approved training course before becoming a licensed daycare provider. This course is also good for existing NYS licensed day care providers for 15 hours of credit towards their 30-hour, bi-annual training requirement.

You will be required to attend a 15-hour training course on child health and safety issues provided by a State Certified Trainer. This is a competency training explaining health and safety requirements. You will be required to pass all areas of a final exam to obtain the necessary certificate. If you are applying to become a Licensed Group Family Day Care provider, your Assistant Provider is recommended to attend the training and obtain the certificate as well. Participants must attend all sessions of the course in order to receive their certification. The course consists of 8 parts:
  • Preventing Childhood Injuries
  • Supervision
  • Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
  • Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS)
  • Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse
  • Food Safety
  • Preventing Disease Transmission (PDT)
  • Caring for ill Children

The health and safety training is a competency based training that all prospective providers are required to successfully complete before they can be issued a family child care registration. Once you receive your family child care registration, you can submit a "rebate form" to get reimbursed for the fee you paid to take the health and safety training for the holder of the license.
